The Bronx Museum of the Arts organized a multi-venue artisticand cultural survey of The Young Lords Organization—a radical social activist group founded by PuertoRican youth in the 1960s that demanded reform in health care, education, housing, employment, andpolicing. Exhibitions of art and archival materials at three cultural institutions in New York City explored how the Young Lords’ activities, community-focused initiatives, and their affirmation of PuertoRican identity inspired artists from the 1960s to the present day, and had a major impact on the City andthe social history of the United States.

and Loisaida Inc. (July 30 – December 1, 2015) . The initiative included public and educational programs across partneringvenues to build awareness of the Young Lords’ innovative contributions to the struggle for civil rightsand influence on contemporary artists, and to spark conversations about grassroots community activismtoday. The institutions partnering in were all located inneighborhoods where the Young Lords were most active, and each exhibition reflects on the YoungLords’ activities in that part of the City.

“The Young Lords had a defining influence on social activism, art, and identity politics, but the lastingsignificance of their achievements has rarely been examined,” said The Bronx Museum’s ExecutiveDirector Holly Block. “In k, The Bronx Museum will partner with El Museo del Barrio and Loisaida Inc. to explore the Young Lord’s cultural impact in New York andthe country at large. The issues the Young Lords struggled with are still timely, and their aesthetic andcultural vision still inspires both artists and community leaders today. We’re pleased to work with ourpartner institutions to bring this story to the public.”

at The Bronx Museum was organized by guest curator, scholarand professor Johanna Fernández and adjunct curator Yasmin Ramírez. The exhibition featured morethan 50 works, including paintings, installations, photographs, films, and rare archival materials thathighlight the presence of women in the Young Lords, the struggle for equal representation of Latinos inthe media, and community actions in the South Bronx—from the takeover of Lincoln Hospital in TheBronx and the implementation of a holistic drug detox program, to the publication of a bilingualnewspaper .

Highlights of the exhibition at the Bronx Museum included: -An artistic reconstruction of the Bronx office of the Young Lords by curator Johanna Fernándezand Bronx-based artist Hatuey Ramos-Fermín. -An overview of the Young Lords influence on artistic activism and production in New Yorkfeaturing works in The Bronx Museum of the Arts permanent collection curated by YasminRamírez. -An installation dedicated to the women in the Young Lords organized in collaboration with artistSophia Dawson and members of Young Lords Women’s Caucus. -A rotating screening room with rarely-seen films featuring the Young Lords and their contemporaries. -Free reproductions of the one-year anniversary issue of for visitors to take.

Programs at The Bronx Museum included film screenings, workshops and panel discussions featuringmembers of the Young Lords Organization and contemporary artists

The exhibition at El Museo del Barrio will display work related to the Young Lords’ work in EastHarlem—including the organization’s series of theatrical garbage-dumping protests and their peacefuloccupation of the First People’s Church.

Loisiada Inc. will focus on the Young Lords’ founding in the Lower East Side—displaying rarely seenphotographs and reportage of the announcement of founding of the Young Lords Party in TomkinsSquare Park on June 26, 1969, and paraphernalia from the Young Lords Lower East Side offices. Theexhibition will examine the impact of the Young Lords Gay and Lesbian Caucus. It will also focus on thecultural activism of Young Lord Eddie Figueroa, founder of The New Rican Village, an influential multidisciplinaryart space on Avenue A that later became home to the legendary gay performance space ThePyramid Club.

Influenced by the Black Panthers and grassroots protests against the Vietnam War, the Young Lords werea radical social organization led by poor and working-class Puerto Rican youth in the 1960s. The Lordsbuilt a nationwide movement to address the social issues afflicting their communities—such as education, health care, affordable housing, high unemployment, and police brutality. The Young Lords’ activitieswere innovative, highly effective, and often resulted in legal mandates that institutionalized their policies.

In New York, the Young Lords’ actions included theatrical garbage-dumping protests in East Harlem and aseries of audacious church and hospital occupations. In East Harlem and the South Bronx, where theYoung Lords were highly active, the organization tested residential areas for lead poisoning, providedbreakfast for schoolchildren, and demanded a “13 Point Program” calling for an end to discrimination, police brutality, and mass incarceration. Among other victories, the Young Lords’ activities led to aformulation of a patient’s bill of rights, the passing of new housing legislation, and the building of a newhospital complex in the Bronx. Johanna Fernández holds a Ph.D. in History from Columbia University and a B.A. in Literature andAmerican Studies from Brown University. Empiric antibiotic therapy was considered adequate if the patient received intravenous treatment with an antibiotic for which the bacterial isolate was fully susceptible, except for ciprofloxacin, where oral therapy was also considered adequate. According to the local guidelines of the Department of Clinical Microbiology, therapy with benzylpenicillin was considered adequate for isolates susceptible for ampicillin. Definitive antibiotic therapy was defined as the antibiotic therapy administered after the results of susceptibility testing were available. If a patient died before susceptibility data were available, the empiric antibiotic therapy given at time of death was also considered as definitive antibiotic therapy.

Statistics were performed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (version 16.0; SPSS, IBM). Data are represented as medians and interquartile ranges. Comparison between groups was performed using the Mann Whitney test for continuous data and the Fisher Exact test for categorical data. Kaplan-Meyer survival curves and the Log-rank test were performed according to definitive antibiotic therapy (benzylpenicillin, cefuroxime, aminopenicillins and broadspectrum antibiotics). Logistic regression analysis was employed for calculating the relative risk of dying within 30 days after blood culturing. Due to the relatively low number of fatal outcomes compared to the number of variables studied, multivariable analyses were only performed for evaluating the association between definitive antibiotic therapy and mortality by adjusting for confounding variables in bivariate analyses []. value <0.05 was considered as statistically significant.

CØ designed the study. ST collected data from medical records. CØ + ST performed data analysis, drafted and approved the final manuscript.

What is the best way to cut a SIP Panel?
An over-sized circular saw is useful for cutting thinner SIP Panels. Larger SIP Panels are cut most effectively with a circular saw fitted with a chain saw blade. page for more information.
Do I need to protect the Panels before Use?
While storing structural insulated panels, protect them from damage by keeping them covered. It is best to keep them dry as OSB and other wood products will swell and will need to dry out before use.
Does there need to be an expansion joint?
There should be gap between panel skins of about 1/8″
Do I do anything special when installing windows and doors?
When creating openings (i.e. windows), the foam should notched to allow for a framing member. This slot can be made using the IADDIC edge router. Once notched, insert a framing member into the notch.
How is wiring handled?
Wiring and plumbing chases are typically installed while you are making the panels. However, chases can be drilled or routed into the panel afterward. We offer a conduit chase drill for this purpose.
Can SIP Panels be used below Grade?
SIP Panels constructed from MgO cement board skins are perfect for long lasting below grade applications. Wood skinned products do not do as well below grade as the wood rots.
Can MGO panels be manufactured in other sizes?
Yes, you can customize panel sizes: Length, Width, and Thickness before the panels are made. Panels can also be cut into virtually any shape after the panel is made.
Can MGO panels be used as a floor?
Yes, MGO SIP panels can be used in a flooring system quite easily on the on-grade floor and applied over a structural joist system for upper floors. Care must be taken to ensure the floor joist system can support anticipated loads.
Can MGO panels be used for roofing?
Absolutely! MGO SIP Panels have a number of benefits that make them suitable for roof application: They are water resistant and have high load strength. They can be used to create roofs that are flat or pitched.
What is the roof load rating?
Typically the dead load is about Ten (10) pounds per square foot and live loads are relative to Geographic conditions and are determined by location.
Can MGO SIP panels be used as interior walls?
Yes: The whole point behind the IADDIC system is to give you the flexibility to complete the building envelope and the interior wall system. Because of this, you do not need to acquire additional materials or hire other framing tradesmen.Plus, using the structural insulated panels on interior walls provides increased fire protection, increased thermal mass, and improved noise reduction. They make great load bearing walls.
What is a thermal bridge?

Other mechanisms that may contribute to resistance in Bacteroides species include efflux pumps. Few or no data exist on any efflux system in Bacteroides species, but overexpression of the efflux pumps is often involved in multidrug resistance in other species and for other antibiotics. Pumbwe et al [ 20 , 21 ] suggest that efflux overexpression plays a role in metronidazole resistance and can cause low to intermediate resistance to fluoroquinolones and high resistance to β-lactams in clinical Bacteroides strains. This mechanism could play an important role in the increased number of isolated clinical multidrug-resistant strains that lack any of the known nim genes. Additional investigations are needed. The alteration of DNA repair systems playing a role in metronidazole resistance in H. pylori is another incompletely studied mechanism in Bacteroides strains. Overexpression of the enzymes involved in the process is correlated with decreased antibiotic susceptibility. A strong candidate is the recA protein; mutants deficient in its expression are sensitive to oxygen stress and to the action of metronidazole. Other genes in the rec family have also been suggested for a role in DNA repair, although they have not been as well studied [ 22 ].

The mechanism of inducible metronidazole resistance is another feature of the metronidazole drug that could have clinical implications. Reversible and irreversible high-level resistance have been induced in susceptible clinical Bacteroides strains with use of subinhibitory concentrations of metronidazole [ 15 , 23 ]. Subinhibitory concentrations of metronidazole can interfere with the cellular properties of members of the B. fragilis group, with implications for their interactions with the host defense [ 24 ]. In an in vitro assay, metronidazole resistance was shown to be associated with superior internalization activity of H. pylori , providing a protection against antibiotic treatment [ 25 ].

Alterations in the bacterial composition and overgrowth of yeasts, as well as selection of resistant strains, have been shown to be associated with metronidazole administration in combination with other agents, such as amoxicillin and clarithromycin [ 26 ]. The impact of metronidazole on the normal microflora varies, depending on the body site involved. Concentrations of metronidazole exceeding MIC values of anaerobes are found during treatment in body fluids, such as saliva, which may explain the reduction in the number of oropharyngeal anaerobic bacteria after combination treatment with metronidazole and clarithromycin [ 27 ]. In the study by Adamsson et al [ 27 ], suppression of the anaerobic flora of the intestine, likely resulting from the administration of clarithromycin, was also recorded. The concentration of active metronidazole in feces is low during administration, because the agent is well absorbed and is excreted primarily by liver metabolism; however, high concentrations have been measured in colon tissue [ 28 ]. Only minor changes have been observed in the normal intestinal microflora after oral intake of metronidazole alone. The known clinical efficacy of oral administration of metronidazole in the treatment of C. difficile diarrhea and colitis is attributed to a high plasma level combined with enhanced penetration of metronidazole through the damaged colonic mucosa in infected patients [ 26 ]. Most of the metronidazole affecting C. difficile is thought to reach the gut by diffusion from serum to the intestinal mucosa.
